Literacy is much more than being able to read and write. Literacy allows people to read the world rather just the word. It involves using the different forms of communication which give us further opportunities in our society for ourselves, our families and our communities. Literacy helps us understand the world we live in. It also helps us understand ourselves and express our identity, our ideas and our cultures.

Family Literacy is about building stronger relationships between parents and children. It is about getting parents involved in their children’s education and about building stronger families and healthier communities.

The word “family” is used broadly here as two or more people related by blood, marriage, adoption or commitment to care for one another. The word “parents” includes all the caregivers involved in a child’s life.
